9U Mavs No-Hit Lower Southampton; Remain in 3rd Place

ANOTHER MAVS NO-HITTER

Upper Makefield 9U Travel Mavs Rinse Distaste of Loss to Langhorne by Blanking Lower Southampton, 17-0

No runs, two walks, five strikeouts, one error.

That was the narrow line between lopsided victory and perfection for the Upper Makefield 9U Mavs on an SPF-50 Sunday at Lookout Middle Field on Sunday, May 20.

Right-handers Leo “The Hammer” Brunk, Nicholas “TNT” Taylor and Ryan “Coolio” Coolahan combined to no-hit Pennsylvania Cal Ripken District 3 rival Lower Southampton on a combined 55 pitches en route to a 17-0 mercy throttling.

The no-hitter, which followed on a hard-fought, 9-6 setback to Langhorne, kept the Mavs (6-1-2) firmly entrenched in a third-place tie with Lenape Valley the race for Suburban Travel League playoff positioning.

It was the Mavs’ second no-hitter of the 2012 season, following an 11-0 tournament win at Bensalem back in March.

Ethan “Big Game” Blatz moved to the leadoff spot and provided a big spark, reaching base via single each of his first three times at the plate and scoring three runs. Blatz also pumped the team up in the pregame dugout with some choice words of encouragement. His bunts? Let’s just say had the opponent doing the LoSo scramble.

Manager Lou Bencardino issued three game balls, one to The Hammer (who threw 14 strikes and 10 balls, walking one and striking out three), one to Big Game Blatz and one to Josh “Hampster” Hampshire, who reached base three times, scored a run, and made a fine pair of defensive plays at second base during the second inning.

Collin “Money” Manel also reached base three times and scored three runs, while Anthony “Freight Train” Bencardino slugged a two-run triple and scored three runs while featuring a confident stroke at the plate. When the lights come on, the Freight Train accelerates.

Brunk scored three runs on a 2-for-2 afternoon that also included a walk, and “Zach Attack” Van Arsdale perfectly executed a pair of first-inning assists from third to first base and scored two runs.

Louis “Hoove” Bencardino caught a pair of innings and drove in two runs on a 2-for-2 effort that included a sacrifice fly and a well-struck double. Dominic “The Dominator” Edwards singled and walked while catching the last two innings of the no-hitter.

TNT Taylor continued his fine work at the plate over the weekend, singling against Lower Southampton after clobbering a leadoff double for his second hit of the night against Langhorne.

The Mavs’ Sunday slugfest featured four runs in the first inning, seven in the second, and six more in the third. Interstate 4-7-6 was a blue route for the visitors, indeed.

Stars of the night in the Langhorne tilt included Freight Train (two runs scored) and The Hammer (two hits and three runs scored). The Mavs fell behind, 4-0, in the first inning and spent much of the night clawing back. Ultimately, they fell just short – as Langhorne made some key plays in the clutch.

Nonetheless, it’s worth noting the words of home plate umpire Brian Townsend, “I thought you guys were going to get them. You came back like gangbusters.”

In the event of a rematch with Langhorne in the Suburban Playoffs or beyond, the Mavs know they must compete with sound fundamentals and confidence – like they have for so much of this season to date.

The Mavs played Sunday without the stellar services of Mikey “Country Clubber” Sylvester, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs against Langhorne.     The Country Clubber should be back in action for Pennsbury #1 on Friday, May 25, at Lookout Middle.

Go Mavs – win every inning!

9U Mavs Go Undefeated to Win Bensalem Spring Invitational Tourney

MAV-NIFICENT

The difference between extraordinary and ordinary is a little something “extra.”

In the tense, anxious moments before the Upper Makefield 9U Travel Mavs took the field for the championship of the Bensalem Spring Invitational Tournament, Manager Lou Bencardino summoned his impeccable motivational skills.

“This is why we came down here,” stated the baseball baron before his mighty Mavs no-hit host Bensalem to the tune of an 11-0 championship beatdown. “We are going to show them no mercy. We destroy them.”

And so it was this weekend as the Mavs outscored six opponents to the tune of 83-17. Tournament MVP Anthony “Freight Train” Bencardino combined with Mikey “Country Clubber” Sylvester to allow just three Bensalem base runners (hit by pitch, walk and error) in the mercy-rule shortened contest.

For an early season effort, it was pure March Madness – with a diabolically efficient result.

There was no karma needed, no smoke and mirrors or even Rich Manel’s kismet khaki shorts (which he donned for the postgame meal). This was solid fundamental baseball, brilliant situational hitting and overpowering, strike throwing mound work.

The Iron Mike automated pitching machine at Big Leagues would have been envious of Freight Train and Country Clubber. Anthony Bencardino three a tidy 39 pitches (24 strikes) over three innings with four strikeouts and Mikey Sylvester threw 32 pitches (16 strikes) over the final two.

Weaving in and out of the zone like a UPS van on I-95 at rush hour, Anthony and Mike nibbled cheese and cleansed their palates with 108-stitch hardball handiwork.

In fact, Anthony was throwing so efficiently that a side conversation behind the Bensalem dugout was memorable. Observed one young fan, “He’s throwing kinda hard.” The incredulous response was priceless, “What do you mean kinda hard?” Game, set, argument done.

Freight Train – way to announce your presence with authority.

At the plate, there were heroes aplenty for the Mavs, who scored like a bicycle lock combination – 3-2-2-2-2 – or at least two runs in each inning. Freight Train had two two-RBI doubles, Josh “Hampy”Hampshire walked three times and scored a pair of runs, Collin “Money” Manel went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Sylvester stroked a deep triple to center during the Mavs’ three-run first. It was one of four extra base hits the “Country Clubber” authored in the tourney. Hampshire played marvelous second base throughout, coralling balls with aplomb and even bare-handing a couple assists.

For the weekend, Anthony Bencardino reached base a whopping 15 out of the 20 times he came to the plate – a Barry Bonds-esque .750 on-base percentage.

Zachary “Zach Attack” Van Arsdale put an exclamation point on his fine weekend by going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a great third base throw on Bensalem speedster J.J. Johnson to open the fourth inning. For the weekend Van Arsdale was 11-for-18 (.611) at the plate hitting in the No. 6 hole.

Louis “Hoove” Bencardino went the distance at catcher for the Mavs in the championship, tossing in a solid double and scoring a run after a one-out walk in the second. The Hoovinator also kept Bensalem’s vaunted running game in shackles.

“Dangerous” Dominic Edwards finished up an 8-for-17 weekend at the plate with a third-inning RBI groundout, and Nicholas “TNT”Taylor had a huge RBI single in the fifth and scored two championship runs. Taylor’s contributions to the tournament were invaluable, as he pitched five superb innings and allowed the Mavs to distribute their mound workload.

Ryan “Coolio” Coolahan had a big performance with the spotlight on him, going 2-for-3 and catching the final out in center field to trigger another Mavs’ celebration. Coolahan also pitched very well in the tournament, showing his mettle and his fastball.

Leo “The Hammer” Brunk scored one championship run to follow a huge two-run early afternoon double against New Jersey foe Marlboro – which the Mavs defeated 11-1. Brunk also reached base all three times up in a 14-6 quarterfinal triumph over Warwick. Obviously, there’s a time to use a Hammer and a time to use a glove.

Ethan “Big Game” Blatz continued to show his mastery of the sacrifice bunt and his moxie at the plate with a 1-for-2, one sacrifice effort against Bensalem. His tournament also showcased the mental toughness that has come to characterize his game.

The Mavs would like to express their thanks to all the families who supported their efforts through a long weekend of baseball. Coach Kevin gets a special mention for his fine work with the team, as does Mrs. Sims from Valley who made certain dentists in the region will have plenty of work with her in-kind contribution of Bazooka bubble gum.

The Mavs will continue working hard, giving “100 percent Mavs energy,” and believing in the beauty of baseball done right and with respect for the game.

This is how we do it – with a little something extra for emphasis.

 Go Mavs!

By UMYBL

Everyone Joins in the Fun!

Opening Day Ceremonies at the rededicated Lookout Park were a big success as it seemed every child and parent had a hand in ribbon-cutting, the player parade, player clinics, pictures, or just taking in the brand new facilities.

Thanks again to those who made this possible: the Upper Makefield Township Supervisors, The Upper Makefield Parks and Recreation department, the UMYBL Board (especially Clare Myers who headed up the event), and our Legacy Sponsors,
