2010 Cal Ripken PA SE State Championships

Langhorne - 2010 PA SE State Champs!

State Title Championship Game

Langhorne 5 Warrington 3

Langhorne Holds Off Warrington to Win States Title, 5-3

by James D'Arcangelo

The history between Langhorne and Warrington in this age group is deep, one team’s exhilarating win is the other’s gut-wrenching loss, one team’s long home run is the other’s pitch they deeply wish they had back, because every such home run is meaningful – in essence, one team’s kick is the other’s sore shin. After last year’s State Championship game, in which Warrington edged Langhorne, 1-0 in their bottom of the sixth, walk-off State Championship win, Langhorne felt the empty pain while Warrington celebrated. This year, the roles were reversed and it was Langhorne that hung on tight at the very end to beat Warrington 5-3, prying the State Title from Warrington’s clenched fists.
A scoreless tie through three innings lead spectators and players to wonder if this might be a replay of last year’s nail-biter. However, Langhorne’s Conner McCracken McCracked a solo home run high into the trees in right field, to let everyone know an infield hit would not likely define this game. But his shot was answered by Warrington’s Brendan Parker’s RBI double to left field, which scored J.M. Clauss who had singled earlier to start things off.
Langhorne’s Nolan Jones, arguably the tournament’s MVP, lined yet another waist-high or lower pitch for a home run to center field, giving Langhorne a 2-1 lead. This lead would be extended when Joel Thibodeau hit an RBI sacrifice grounder to make it 3-1.
In the top of the sixth, still defending that 3-1 lead, Langhorne bared its fangs to reveal a killer instinct by placing runners on second and third, sending the top of its order stepping to the plate. Warrington’s Will Moller intentionally walked Nolan Jones, only to bring up Danny Bishop. Cries of “Make them pay for that Danny” rang from the Langhorne dug-out. He obliged. Bishop slammed the game-sealing two-run double to left field, giving Langhorne a seemingly insurmountable 5-1.
But, in the bottom of the sixth, Warrington showed why it was the defending State Champ. They were down but their heads weren’t. Leading off the inning was J.M. Clauss, Warrington’s “Mr. Clutch” in these annual tournaments. Shaking off a questionable first strike, Clauss did what he does best. He stroked a single to center to get his Wolf Pack going. Tommy Funk followed a few batters later, pulling a two-run single to right. Warrington was alive and kicking, but not for long as Langhorne’s killer instinct surfaced again and they choked off any hope, and Joel Thibodeau made the last out on a fly ball to left.
Warrington played exceptionally tough in the Tournament, coming back from the brink of elimination earlier to make a great run in defending their State title. Langhorne, on the other hand, completed their unfinished business from last year, winning seven of their last nine going back to Districts against the best-in-area competition and beating Warrington twice in this Tournament to win the State Championship We wish them good luck as they head to the Regional championships.

This was another classic championship game, a fitting end as we conclude the fun of a memorable five-day weekend at the 2010 PA SE Cal Ripken State Tournament in Upper Makefield.
