UMYBL's 12As continued to roll against top regional teams in tournament competition. After having beaten the 2009 NJ State Champs (which finished second in the Cal Ripken Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships) in pool play, the Mavs couldn't close them out twice, falling in the championship game. Juliano Kovalcik had two grand slams in the tournament, and Nick Roda had a very strong game pitching and hitting past Bayonne. Kovalcik and Chase D'Arcangelo combined as pitchers to close down the Bridgewater champion team in the pool play victory.
Over 500 people turned out on a clear, perfect night at George's Field. With the National League semi-final game in the background, all age groups lined up for their awards, pizza, hot dogs, drinks, and lots of other food supplied by parents. Chuck Gettis, Board member and Rookie League coordinator, MC'd the event and kept it all orderly somehow!
Aside from participation trophies for younger softball and baseball age groups, team trophies for the victorious Diamondbacks in the Rookie League and Indians in the American League, and even beyond the appearance of Boomer the Trenton Thunder mascot, there were the Brian Kiefer Awards for Sportsmanship.
